See if you can relate to this...
You used to be a big dreamer. When you were little, you would wake up and proclaim what your new dream was, or maybe you were the quiet sort, who would go directly to the store and buy whatever materials you'd need to kickstart your dream career. And mortify your parents.
Archaeologist, actress, film director, veterinarian, dog walker, astronaut.
As children, we all have these big dreams, and as we grow older, we go through different ones, outgrow them, and move on to the next one. In the process, we sometimes lose ourselves or get stuck somewhere.
Problem is, the world can't always accommodate our crazy dreams.
And it's not like we can be ALL THE THINGS...
So we let time pass and we let our dreams go, and sometimes we even still say what we want to be and realize - that's just an old dream. What's my new one? Most of the time, people just follow their circumstance and settle for second best. But what if you didn't have to settle? What if you could make your dream come true? What if you could do ANYTHING you set your mind to?
That's where some of us get stuck. Because what if you have more than one dreams? What if you're interested in many things at once?
You may be multipassionate.
While some people have NO idea what they want to do, other people are just overwhelmed by the MANY things they want to do, and that comes along with many types of paths and dreams you can follow.
And that's when you start worrying:
“What if I choose something and it’s the WRONG CHOICE?”
First of all, I totally get you because you're multipassionate and I am, too. This means that you don't follow the traditional career path of specializing in one thing so you can spend your life doing it. You can't box yourself like that.
That is a blessing and a curse.
A blessing because it's fun and challenging, and because that's just the way your mind works. A curse because nobody around you even understands what you're trying to do and they end up slapping labels on you, like flakey and undecisive.
They think you just don't know what you want.
Actually, you know exactly what you want: You want to try EVERYTHING.
Everything is interesting and so you spend your life collecting so many puzzle pieces, to eventually put them together into a magnificent life puzzle. Trouble is, you don't know if it's even going to make sense, until you complete it.
Which means a lot of wandering and experimenting... and wondering if everyone else is right and you should choose something already.
Please don't. Your mind is a beautiful tapestry of ideas and experiences that combine in beautiful and unexpected ways. If you ever choose to conform and choose something, you'd be depraving the world of your unique abilities.
When you have many dreams, which one do you choose? (Hint: You don't.)
Last year you wanted to a programmer, and now, a poet.
You have probably gone through a whole sleuth of dreams in your life time - from photographer to drummer to lifestyle blogger to etsy shop owner to startup entrepreneur to marketing consultant to drummer to flight attendant.
This is because LEARNING and BEGINNINGS are what you love the most.
As a result, your big dreams for the future change every once in a while - might be every year or even every month nowadays.
Don't worry, this doesn't mean you're crazy - because many multipassionates have complained they feel "schitzo" and like they will never know exactly what they want to accomplish in life, but listen... Your goal is not to accomplish ONE THING, it's not to be known for one thing, it's to evolve as naturally as you can and find yourself in a place where you're ready for Creative Convergence.
Wait, what's creative convergence???
“Creative Convergence is bringing your passions together.”
Sometimes that means literally smushing a couple or more of your passions - or callings - together and creating a hybrid and other times it means creating something strong and flexible enough to accommodate all of your passions, like a Multipassionate Brand or a slash career or something.
And each type of convergence is as individual and unique as you, and the only way to discover it is by a lot of trial and error.
But the point of this article is not to help you achieve convergence...
You see, convergence is a very intellectual kind of thing, you can "figure it out," but there's another way to know what you want to do with your life, and that other way is to use the opposite approach and FEEL IT.
Take the Goosebump test.
Disclaimer: The point of this exercise is NOT to make you choose a path that you can follow for the rest of your life, but to learn what is TRULY important to you, so that you don't forget it during your pursuit of other passions.
For example...
I have spent my life trying many "paths" and I have even succeeded to "converge" some of them by starting my own creative business.
However.
In doing so I have managed to forget my ultimate dream sometimes, and maybe that's happened to you, too. Sometimes we forget what's truly important to us because we're too busy following flashy ideas and all kinds of newness.
Before I illustrate, let's do the Goosebump test:
Then do it for EVERY DREAM you've had in the last 5 years or so. Do it for every new dream that crosses your mind and excites your heart.
As you visualize these things, check for goosebumps and happy tears.
If you don't experience a visceral reaction to your dream, then it's just an idea, it's just a dream that is a temporary thing you're looking forward to until the next one arrives. It's a placeholder, not the real thing.
And that is the GOOSEBUMP TEST. Once you take it, you will realize there might be one thing that you have always dreamed of, or maybe it only recently entered your life, but it is EVERYTHING to you. It is a constant.
And I believe this particular dream should be prioritized over the others.
Meaning that you can still do other things and strive toward other goals - after all, you are pretty good at multitasking - but you must never forget or compromise your ultimate dream for any other.
For example...
I was ignoring my ultimate dream because I've been caught up in a never-ending string of temporary ones.
I realized this only recently because I was feeling tired of constantly coming up with new dreams and never having time for my books.
You see...
I've been writing novels my whole life, but I never managed to publish or even finish one because I never prioritized it.
And yet, the only dream that causes goosebumps and happy tears is seeing my novel published on a shelf at the bookstore.
I have the exact same reaction when I watch a movie and the protagonist has a book published or when I read a book and the main character has had their dream of being a published author realized.
Every. Single. Time.
First the goosebumps take over my body, then the tears start falling, and they're half-sad, half-happy because I'd be so happy if it happened to me, but I also know that it's never going to happen unless I prioritize it.
“After so many years of chasing after flashy things, I have finally decided to change things around in 2018.”
I am going to continue running my creative business and grow my skill set, but I'm also going to give my novels just as much time and energy.
Now, if you're 15 and you have your life ahead of you, just go with the flow.
But if you're in your late 20's or 30's or whatever your age is, and you're feeling like your life is passing you by and your biggest dream is wilting away and you're letting it, then my friend, you need to re-prioritize your life.
You need to give yourself permission to follow your scariest dream and admit that maybe those other interim dreams are just distractions.
I don't know what your reason for delaying your biggest dream is, and I don't know for sure if you have one... but I do know that I have to share this message and hope that it helps somebody live their most authentic life. Which should be the most important goal to everyone, multipassionate or not.
What about you?
Have you been putting your ultimate dream on hold because you're afraid or because you're too busy chasing flashy ideas?
Then please, take the Goosebump test, and decide to prioritize what truly matters in the coming year. Because if not now, when?
You deserve to have everything you want, without having to compromise who you are, what you love, or what you stand for.
