I hope you still write fiction.

It's not just about hustling and achievement, sometimes it's about being able to do the things you used to love doing once just for yourself, for fun. I hope you still write poetry, fiction, or whatever lights you up.

There's a song I always go back to.

It's a country song, called I Hope You Dance, performed by Lee Ann Womack.

Here are some of the words that touched me:

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin'
Lovin' might be a mistake, but it's worth makin'
Don't let some Hellbent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to sellin' out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance
I hope you dance

That song to me represents how life sometimes crushes our dreams and ideals and spirit, and the ones left dancing are the strong ones.

As a multipassionate rebel, you'll do a lot of things in your life.

You will fall in love with many topics, acquire many skills, and you'll never want to stop learning. You'll mix some things that had never been mixed before and you'll have some dreams that seem so close, and others that seem too far. Some of your dreams will be like castles in the sky, and others more tangible.

My wish for you (another amazing song) is that you will not compromise your castles in the sky for things that seem more tangible.

I hope that in the face of the world telling you there's no point and in the face of your own inner voice telling you there's no point, you will be strong and hold onto your dearest dreams, especially the ones that may not "pan out."

Life is not about hustling, achievement, and instant gratification. Life is about living and dreaming and dancing...

So my questions to you, fellow dreamer, are:

  • Do you still dance when everyone else has stopped?

  • Do you still hold onto your dearest and oldest dreams?

  • Do you still feel the fire burn inside your soul?

I named this article I Hope You Still Write Fiction because my dearest and oldest dream - what sustains my soul - is to be a fiction author. Almost every year I come up with a new fantasy/scifi idea, and I start writing...

Some years I get impatient or bored.

Some years I expect too much, and stop.

Some years I keep going for as long as I can...

But I never stop writing fiction.

Because I know that even though I won't achieve anything doing it, not any time soon, and that gratification will be very delayed, and that I don't even know if I can "pull it off," it is something that will always sustain me.

Like the ocean and the sounds it makes. :)

I hope that you still write fiction, or whatever your dream is. I hope that you'll never stop dancing in the storms. And I hope you're reading this and smiling because you know you're already doing it.

You're living, not getting by.
