How I Became My Own Boss by Side-Hustling and Doing What I Love

Firstly, I believe in the side hustle 100%. It's unrealistic to think that you could ever reach a moment where you can just cut off all financial security and start the career of your dreams. Unless you have years of savings or planning a couchsurfing trip.

You know who else believes in it? Marie Forleo. She was a bartender and fitness instructor when she was first launching her life coaching business.

But beware. There's a trap where the unassuming fall to their detriment. It's called "the eternal side-hustle".

You have plenty of talents, skills, and passion. Don't ever say otherwise.

honestly don't understand what people mean when they say they "don't have talents" or they "don't have any skills". I'm assuming you've human and you've been on this planet a while, maybe some time beyond college. So how can you not have these things?!

Well, let me tell you - you have them! And you have them aplenty. :)

And so many successful people will back me up on this. Off the top of my head: Oprah, Marie Forleo, Gary Vaynerchuk, Jeff Goins, Jon Acuff, James Clear, and many more.

You could say that discovering these things in yourself and using them the best you can is the secret to happiness and success.

How to Align Everything Before Selling (Complete Guide with Exercises)

Imagine you’re building a house. You start with the first floor, then the second, and years later — after you’ve lived in it for a while — you want to add a balcony or another floor, but your contractor tells you the house wasn’t built for that.

Do you tear it down and start over or do you wish you’d thought about it earlier?

This building is your business. (And your services, and your products.) Starting over is costly and timely, so you need an excellent foundation with room for growth.

This is why I created the following "Venn Alignment Diagram".

Big Magic: The Importance of Goose Bumps And Doing Things "Just for Fun"

Big Magic: The Importance of Goose Bumps And Doing Things "Just for Fun"

As I read Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, I recall the times when I read this kind of thing on the regular. Eight years ago, I had just started University and went into the U.S. for a summer job of knocking on doors and being chased by dogs, a.k.a. "door-to-door sales".

In my free time - which was measly - I spent every minute pouring over books about writing because I had never had access to those before. You know the usuals - Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, The Writer's Journey by Julia Cameron, and so on.

I can hardly remember a time when I was more inspired than I was back then. And I wasn't writing, don't get me wrong. I was just consuming all the inspiration I could get from those people - it was my morning breakfast and my evening meal. It was what kept me sane and growing and just full of joy. All summer, amidst my inability to sell a thing.

Don't suffer in marketing. Find your unique and natural formula.

Don't suffer in marketing. Find your unique and natural formula.

I hate selling. I hate popups, too. I even hate promoting my own articles because it feels redundant. I hate everything marketing is supposed to be about (my views differ from popular belief), and yet, I practice it daily and I'm actually loving it.

But it wasn't always like this...

For years I suffered every time I had to use facebook or linkedin. Every time someone asked me about SEO. I still suffer to this day when I meet clients who only want two things - either to get someone else to do the marketing for them or to find some magic skeleton key that will open all doors.

Aren't you tired of trying so hard and coming up with little return? Of french-kissing your site's visitors and worrying about vanity metrics? Don't you want to stop suffering and start having the time of your life?

Yeah, I've been there. And the thing is, you don't have to suffer.

The new truth about marketing: people buy people, not products.

The new truth about marketing: people buy people, not products.

Today I’m going to talk about 3 things - personality, branding, and purpose.

I see so many people struggle with their marketing, more specifically with their messaging, and that’s only because they haven’t found the focus their business needs to prosper. Once you find focus, or as I call it, your purpose, you'll be better equipped to pull clients toward you.

Marketing is not pushing people to buy things; it’s pulling people towards you by providing value.
